ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA’S COMPLICATED HISTORY

Dr. Robert Greene II teaches history at Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC. Since 2019, he has been lead instructor at the Modjeska Simkins School, a project the SC Progressive Network launched in 2015 to teach a people’s history of South Carolina and tools for effective citizenship. This is an excerpt from his remarks at the 2025 Conference of the SC Council for Social Studies held Nov. 13–14, 2025 in Greenville, SC.
